Hello Everyone!
Just as a quick backstory, I’ve struggled with my mental health since I was in high school, BUT I do feel that my mental health has experienced more fluctuations since the onset of my multiple sclerosis. I do understand that certain mental health conditions may come about as a result of receiving a diagnosis; however, that is not the case for me. I appear to experience depressive signs and symptoms every week at this point, and I was wondering if others with an MS diagnosis have encountered something like this before? It almost feels as if the damage sustained by the condition itself is affecting the course of my mental health.
If you have noticed this connection, what have you mentioned to your neurologist and/or primary care practitioner? What coping methods have you used successfully, especially when it comes to work performance?
Please let me know your thoughts on this! Thank you so much for reading, everyone!
It's great that you're reaching out to share your experiences. You're definitely not alone in feeling that fluctuations in mental health can be influenced by the challenges of living with multiple sclerosis. Many people in the MS community report similar feelings, and it's important to recognize that this connection can be very real.
Talking openly about your experiences with your neurologist or primary care provider can be a vital and helpful step. They can offer insights and help tailor a plan that addresses any mental health needs.
In terms of other coping strategies, some individuals find mindfulness practices or even regular exercise, to be beneficial. It’s about finding what works for you and creating a supportive routine.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Opening up this conversation is crucial, and I hope you continue to find the support and strategies that resonate with you.
Thanks for sharing your story—it really takes courage to talk about these things. A lot of people with MS can totally relate to what you're experiencing (including myself). It's important to recognize how the condition can impact your mental health. When I was dealing with mental health issues – I vented to another person that was also diagnosed with MS. Simply venting and sharing my feelings helped relieve some of the strain I felt – it felt so good to be honest and heard.
At work – try setting realistic goals (I know it’s easier said than done). I have a stress ball at my desk at all times and do breathing exercises when feeling overwhelmed (every day).
Just remember, you're not alone in this, and reaching out for support is a great step!
